Giving Voice: Testimonies of Detainment and Deportation

België kent zes detentiecentra waar migranten worden gedetineerd voorafgaand aan hun deportatie. Journalisten en activisten worden toegang tot deze plekken stelselmatig ontzegd, waardoor de gebeurtenissen binnen deze omstreden ruimtes in geheimhouding worden gehuld. Wanneer getuigenissen over mensenrechtenschendingen toch de buitenwereld bereiken, verhindert de ban op beelden dat verdere actie wordt ondernomen. Kan film een instrument zijn om deze vormen van staatsgeweld forensisch te onderzoeken en rechtvaardigheid op te eisen?

A.d.h.v. drie films benaderen we cinema als activistische methodologie die als correctief dient op verhalen die zelden het nieuws bereiken. In From Afar (2025) combineren Gilles Vandaele en Martijn De Meuleneire een afstandelijke beeldtaal met audio-getuigenissen van binnenuit deze centra. De architecturale stilte staat hier in scherp contrast met de wanhoop die zich van binnenuit ontvouwt. Met À l’usage des Vivants (2018) herdenkt Pauline Fonsny de dood van Semira Adamu, een Nigeriaanse vrouw die stierf binnen één van deze centra. In Et Leurs Lettres (2023) belichten Elie Maissin en Mieriën Coppens, samen met La Voix des Sans-Papiers, de dagvaardingen waarmee leden van het collectief worden geconfronteerd.

ENGLISH Belgium has six detention centres where migrants are held prior to their deportation. Journalists and activists are systematically denied access to these places, meaning that events within these controversial spaces are shrouded in secrecy. When testimonies of human rights violations do reach the outside world, the ban on images prevents further action from being taken. Can film be a tool for forensically investigating these forms of state violence and demanding justice?

Using three films, we approach cinema as an activist methodology that serves as a corrective to stories that rarely make the news. In From Afar (2025), Gilles Vandaele and Martijn De Meuleneire combine a detached visual language with audio testimonies from inside these centres. The architectural silence here contrasts sharply with the despair that unfolds from within. With À l’usage des Vivants (2018), Pauline Fonsny commemorates the death of Semira Adamu, a Nigerian woman who died in one of these centres. In Et Leurs Lettres (2023), Elie Maissin and Mieriën Coppens, together with La Voix des Sans-Papiers, highlight the summonses faced by members of the collective.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers involved, as well as representatives from La Voix des Sans-Papiers and Getting The Voice Out. .
