Night of the Horror

Als een buitenaards parasiet barst KASKcinema’s Night of the Horror uit je borstkas. Elk jaar zetten we de toon voor Halloween met een sadistische selectie films die je nachtrust bespoken en zenuwen belagen. In de vorm van een demonisch drieluik laten we een hoop dreigingen los die uit het scherm druipen en je knieën kietelen. Duistere krachten, satanische rituelen en barok bloedvergieten passeren filmisch de revue terwijl special acts en tenenkrullende inleidingen tussen de films door de sinistere sfeer vasthouden. Huil dus mee naar de maan en koop je combiticket voor een evenement vol nachtmerriebrandstof.

20:30 Huesera: The Bone Woman (Michelle Garza Cerveza, 2022, Mexico/Peru, 93’)

Sinister startschot van de avond is het Mexicaanse Huesera. Deze indie huiverhit veroverde het festivalcircuit met haar sluipende terreur, folklorische inspiraties en gretige toetsen body horror. Valeria is een zwangere vrouw die zich steeds meer bedreigd voelt door duistere krachten. Hoe meer het moederschap nadert, hoe duidelijker een sinsitere kracht zich nestelt in haar leven.

22:30 Eight Eyes (Austin Jennings, 2023, VSA, 86’)

Tweede wapenfeit op deze nacht van de wansmaak is het sleazy doch sfeervolle Eight Eyes. Geschoten op korrelig 16mm grijpt de film terug naar de hoogdagen van de exploitatiehorror met een verhaal over een Amerikaans koppel dat door Oost-Europa trekt. Wat Eight Eyes echter met onthoofde nek en schouders boven andere Europtrip gruwel laat steken, is het smakelijke zelfreflectie die Amerika’s toeristische paranoia binnenstebuiten keert.

00:15 Killers clowns From Outer Space (Stephen Chiodo, 1988, VSA, 88’)

Punchline van de nacht zijn de groteske grappen en grollen van Killer Clowns From Outer Space. Mensen met coulrophobia, of chronische clowangst, hebben al lastige jaren achter de rug door o.a. de IT en Terrifier franchise, maar Killer Clowns spant echter de balonnenkroon onder de creepy clowns cinema. Deze horror-comedy dost het alien invasion genre uit met een clownneus en volgt een intergalactische bedreigingen die zijn lange schoenen op aarde heeft gezet.

20:30 Huesera: The Bone Woman (Michelle Garza Cerveza, 2022, Mexico/Peru, 93')
Sinister starter of the evening is Mexico's Huesera. This indie horror hit conquered the festival circuit with its creeping terror, folkloric inspirations and eager touches of body horror. Valeria is a pregnant woman who feels increasingly threatened by dark forces. The more motherhood approaches, the more clearly a sinister force settles into her life.

22:30 Eight Eyes (Austin Jennings, 2023, USA, 86')
Second feat on this night of wackiness is the sleazy yet atmospheric Eight Eyes. Shot on grainy 16mm, the film harks back to the heyday of exploitation horror with a story about an American couple passing through Eastern Europe. However, what makes Eight Eyes stand head and shoulders above other Eurotrip horror is the tasteful self-reflection that turns America's tourist paranoia inside out.

This horror-comedy dons the alien invasion genre with a clown nose and follows an intergalactic menace who has put his long shoes on earth.
